  12. UART is an acronym for "Universal Asynchronous Reciever Transmitter".
  13. It takes the parallel data bits from your computers bus and puts them
  14. in series for transmission via your serial port.  It takes the serial
  15. data bits from the serial port and puts them in parallel for your 
  16. computer bus.  All that to say it converts data from serial to parallel.
  17. It also controls the speed of the port.
